diy smock dress from shirt

Hello :D So here i am with the tutorial for that smock dress from my last post.

Things you will need:
  • A large shirt or t-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Sewing machine (if you have one)
Steps:

1. Cut out the sleeves as close to the seam as possible.

2. Hem the sleeves.

In retrospect, this should have been the last step (O.O)

3. Wear the shirt and mark the point where you would like to cut. Mine was 3" below my boobs.

4. In this step, i wore the upper part and made it fit better as the armholes were huge. Don't make it tight. I tried to take in as little as possible while making the armholes sit perfectly.

5. Now gather the lower/skirt part. I did this by sewing a straight line by hand and pulling the thread so as to 'gather' it.

6. Now pin the lower skirt part with the upper part by matching the sides correctly. You may have to 'gather' and 'ungather' at this point as well.

7. Now sew those parts together.

The (not so) straight line i sew by hand :D

Take out the thread you used to gather the skirt and ta-da, you have a cute dress of your own :D

You can do it with t-shirts as well by going through the same steps as above. Smock dresses are pretty forgiving. So if you want to make a pretty dress for yourself, i suggest you start by this.

Anyways, thanks for reading. Leave a comment if you liked it. :)

Love,
Prerna.
